know your audience

2/8/15

So there was an interesting discussion recently in which we each posed a question to the rest of the class. The questions could be anything we wanted while being respectful and appropriate. We were not supposed to repeat questions, meaning each person was to come up with their own question to pose to the class. I was not surprised that there were several questions that were basically the same. There were several questions asking about redoing something from the past or what we could do differently if we could, and while not surprisingly this question was asked several different ways, but the answers did prove to be somewhat unexpected. Many of the students responded that they would do something different in terms of school such as give it more effort, go to college right after high school, etc. Questions of vacations and travel were not unexpected either.
There were some interesting questions as well. There were some creative questions as well related to music, movies, ad or literature as well. One question asked our favorite movie or real life adaptation based on literature. I thought that was a great question.
Overall some of the things I learned about this group of students based on this assignment was that:
1.       We are animal lovers. When it comes down to cats vs. dogs, I think dogs took the lead by just a hair
2.      Music is popular and a big part of our lives. Music is such an amazing thing it can help define certain times in your life.
3.      We would love to be able to travel or fantasize about our dream places to live. It seems that the tropics or beach locations as well as several places in Europe were popular.
4.      Apparently we as a whole have a lot of debt because the majority of us said we would pay off any debt if we won the lottery, but let’s face it we are college students so regardless of how old or if we work or not we’re pretty much all broke and in debt right? There are a fair amount of us that would also so do some sort of charity with our winnings as well.
5.      When it comes to superpowers we had several different answers such as psychic abilities, flying both of which are not surprising. There were some that would chose the ability to time travel, which I thought was different and interesting. And there were a few that would chose the power to heal.
This assignment was interesting to see the types of questions asked and then to browse through and read the different answers. There are similarities for sure but we are also a rather diverse and eclectic group. I don’t know how an assignment like this would go over in a classroom setting but online it was a great way to get a feel for who our classmates are. With online classes sometimes you just know a name and are trying to picture that person or what they might be like based on your interactions with them but with this assignment it gives you a little peak into what each person is like.

A beautiful day. Sun. Warmth. Breeze. Comfort. What is it about a beautiful day that can change things? No matter what happened earlier in the day there is something about going outside on a beautiful day and washing yourself of it. It’s cleansing. You can walk outside and close  your eyes, feeling the sun wrap itself around you while taking a deep breath letting the fresh air fill your lungs and exhaling almost as if what was in there before was toxic. What we do with this day is not important, run, bike, hike, read a book at the park or simply lay out maybe listening to music. There is something very therapeutic and cathartic about something so simple yet we often take it for granted. If you close your eyes, can you see the brightness behind your eyelids, maybe it yellow or orange. Can you feel the sun’s rays dancing across your body? Can you taste the fresh air when you inhale and feel relief when you exhale? Can you feel your body responding to the power of the sun and other nature? It is calming, soothing, relaxing. It’s freeing.
Too often in our busy lives we forget that there is a world out there that is not connected to the Internet. It’s a world full of wonder and adventure or maybe just a good jog, walk with the dog, or chapter of a book. Days like this are days that bring people together say for cookouts and such. There is an amazing power in a day like this that tangibly can’t be felt or seen and it is often these intangible things that we take for granted yet mean so much.
